Typography

Western uses three typefaces to express its brand: Fira Sans, Montserrat, and PT Serif. All three are free and open-source. They should be used for both internal and external marketing.

Fira Sans

Fira Sans is the official Western sans-serif font.

Attributes

Fira Sans is the Firefox OS typeface. It was designed by Erik Spiekermann and Ralph Du Carrois for Mozilla and released in 2013 in 4 weights. It received a huge update in 2014. Fira is closely related to Spiekermann’s Meta which is used as the brand typeface of the Mozilla Foundation.

Why Fira Sans?

Fira Sans is a highly legible typeface at any size and is great for print and online use. Graphic designers will appreciate that it comes in 9 weights and has a true italic version, as well as condensed and extra condensed widths.

Montserrat Black

Western uses a single weight (Black) of the san-serif typeface Montserrat for campaign and major communication initiatives. It should be displayed uppercase, like the above header.

Attributes

Montserrat is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Argentinian designer Julieta Ulanovsky. The design was inspired by signage from her historical Buenos Aires neighborhood of the same name.

Why Montserrat?

Montserrat closely resembles Knockout, the typeface that was originally chosen for the Make Waves campaign. It is bold, dynamic, and geometrically pleasing while being easier to read at any size.

PT Serif

PT Serif is Western’s official serif typeface.

Attributes

PT Serif was commissioned from the design agency ParaType by Rospechat, a department of the Russian Ministry of Communications, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Peter the Great's orthography reform and to create a font family that supported all the different variations of Cyrillic script used by the minority languages of Russia, as well as the Latin alphabet.

Why PT Serif?

PT Serif is a highly legible typeface that compliments Fira Sans. It comes in two weights and has an italic version.
