Fira Sans

This will be replacing Avenir as the official Western sans-serif font. It's a free, open-source typeface available through Google Fonts.

Why we picked it

Fira Sans is a highly legible typeface at any size and is great for print and online use. Graphic designers will appreciate that it comes in 9 weights and has a true italic version, as well as condensed and extra condensed widths.

Montserrat Black

We are using a single weight of Montserrat for certain print and online elements. It will appear in uppercase, like the above example.

Why we picked it

It closely resembles Knockout, the typeface that was chosen for the Make Waves campaign. It is bold, dynamic, and geometrically pleasing while being easier to read at any size.

Why change the fonts?

We needed a font solution that would let everyone at Western participate in supporting our branding. Our previous fonts (Avenir and Garamond, as well as multiple webfonts and campaign specific fonts) were not making that easy. Hence the need for free and open-source fonts.

The solution needed to satisfy designers and branding, and support accessibility. Fira Sans has great versatility and is one of the most easy to read fonts for web and print (tall x-height, 2-story g, 2-story a, clear differenciation between I, 1, and l, etc.).

PT Serif

PT Serif™ was commissioned from the design agency ParaType by Rospechat, a department of the Russian Ministry of Communications, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Peter the Great's orthography reform and to create a font family that supported all the different variations of Cyrillic script used by the minority languages of Russia, as well as the Latin alphabet.
